The Rwanda Energy Group (REG) has announced the end of what many consumers considered a promotion on electricity purchased at the beginning of the month. The agency clarified that electricity prices are regulated by RURA and do not change based on the date of purchase.
In an official notice, REG stated that pricing remains constant throughout the month, regardless of when electricity is bought.
Here is the updated tariff structure:
0–15 kWh: 89 Rwandan Francs per unit
15–50 kWh: 212 Rwandan Francs per unit
Above 50 kWh: 249 Rwandan Francs per unit (excluding taxes)
REG emphasized: “There are no discounts or price increases based on the date you purchase electricity.” For further inquiries, consumers are encouraged to call 2727.
This announcement follows a long-standing trend where many Rwandans would rush to buy electricity on the 1st of each month, believing it came with bonus units or a discounted rate. REG’s clarification puts an end to what had become an unofficial “promotion” practice.
