Colonel Alain Kiwewa once again reassures the population of Lubero-Centre, urging them to remain calm after hearing gunfire on Friday
This Wed, February 26, 2025, the Administrator of Lubero territory, Colonel Alain Kiwewa, once again addressed the population of Lubero-Centre, urging them to remain calm and trust the authorities after gunfire was heard on Friday, February 23, causing renewed panic.
In his message, he reassured the residents that security forces were in full control and that there was no need to panic. “I ask the people of Lubero-Centre to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors. The FARDC and Wazalendo forces are doing everything possible to maintain security,” he stated.
Some residents had already begun fleeing after hearing the gunfire, fearing an attack by M23 rebels. However, Colonel Kiwewa clarified that the gunfire was caused by a group of undisciplined soldiers undergoing training, and there was no serious security threat.
This reassurance comes amid reports that the M23 rebel group has taken control of Lubero, although residents of Butembo insist that the city is still under FARDC control. The military authorities continue to emphasize that security is being managed and urge the population to avoid misinformation that could create unnecessary panic.
