Miss Rwanda had been arrested for drunk driving after causing an accident.

The news was announced by police on Tuesday after days of speculation that she had been detained over a collision.

A prosecution spokesman said Ms. Muheto’s case will begin to be heard by a court in Kigali, the capital, on Thursday.

Ms. Muheto gained popularity in Rwanda after winning the 2022 national beauty pageant.

The government suspended the competition because the organisers were accused of sexual misbehaviour and it has never been held since.

Driving under influence attracts a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs ($110; £85) and five days in police prison.

Since the authorities began to enforce the law, thousands of people have been arrested for this offence in the recent past.

In 2022, one MP apologized and resigned over driving under influence.
