President Kagame stated that businesses requiring customers to pay in dollars or other foreign currencies must stop this practice entirely.
He made the remarks during a press conference held at the Kigali Convention Centre on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
President Kagame explained that the practice of traders demanding payments in dollars is illegal.
“It’s wrong on two levels,” he said. “For instance, someone who is paid in dollars or euros pays taxes in Rwandan francs, not in dollars. That’s unfair. Similarly, a landlord charging rent in dollars should also pay taxes in dollars. This issue needs proper monitoring because it is a violation of the law, and those who break the law must face consequences.”
The President emphasized that businesses must completely stop the practice of demanding payment in foreign currencies.
“I believe there are mechanisms in place to address this issue and restore order,” he added. “What’s important is to act quickly so this practice is eliminated entirely. I am confident it will be resolved.”
