Following the occupation of Bukavu by armed forces, the provincial government of South Kivu has officially relocated to Uvira, which has been designated as the temporary capital. This move was confirmed by Vice-Governor Jean-Jacques Elakano, who cited official directives from the central government.
“You are certainly aware of the telegram from the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior, instructing us to establish Uvira as the provisional capital of South Kivu,” Elakano stated during the official announcement.
This decision mirrors a similar move in North Kivu, where Beni was declared the temporary provincial capital after the capture of Goma. The Congolese government’s strategy aims to ensure administrative continuity despite the evolving security situation.
Authorities have urged public institutions and services to adjust to the relocation and continue operations from Uvira. However, concerns remain about the humanitarian and security impact of these changes on the region’s population
