Kigali – Popular social media comedian Burikantu, known off-stage as Mwitenge Abdoulkarim, has been arrested by Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on serious allegations of illegally detaining two young women.
According to confirmed information from RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, Burikantu was taken into custody on July 20, 2025. The arrest came after reports emerged that two girls who had gone to visit Burikantu and his colleague were forcibly kept inside their house against their will.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the victims had initially visited the comedians voluntarily. However, what began as a social visit allegedly turned into an unlawful confinement, leading concerned parties to alert the authorities.
The story was first reported by IGIHE and later confirmed by RIB. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged actions and whether additional charges may be brought forward.
Burikantu rose to fame through his comic skits shared widely on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. His arrest has sparked major discussion online, with many expressing shock over the allegations.
RIB has reminded the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
