Toronto – Lagos – Kigali – Masai Ujiri is one of the most respected African-born sports executives in the world, having made a remarkable journey from a modest basketball playing career in Europe to becoming the President of Basketball Operations for the Toronto Raptors and leading them to their first-ever NBA championship in 2019.
Born in the United Kingdom to a Nigerian father and Kenyan mother, Ujiri was raised in Zaria, Nigeria, a city that would later become a symbol of his passion and legacy.

From the Court to the Front Office
Ujiri began his career in basketball not as a star athlete, but through passion and vision. After a short playing stint in Europe, he transitioned to scouting in 2002, first with the Orlando Magic and then with the Denver Nuggets. By 2010, he had risen to become the General Manager and Executive VP of Basketball Operations for the Nuggets.
His impact was immediate , he rebuilt the team and led them back to the playoffs, earning him the NBA Executive of the Year award in 2013.
In 2013, Ujiri returned to the Toronto Raptors as General Manager, where he made bold moves including the now-famous trade for Kawhi Leonard that led the franchise to its first NBA championship in 2019. By then, he had already been promoted to President of Basketball Operations, a role in which he continues to lead.
Zaria court: a beacon of culture, sports, and African pride
Beyond the court, Ujiri has committed himself to developing Africa through sports, culture, and education. In 2021, he built a powerful architectural statement in Lagos, Nigeria the Zaria Court.

Named after his mother’s hometown, Zaria, the structure is more than just a building; it is a space for inspiration, innovation, and African excellence.
The name Zaria Court combines:
Zaria – a nod to his roots in Northern Nigeria.
Court – symbolizing both basketball and a meeting ground for minds, stories, and generations.
The facility features basketball courts, art galleries, conference spaces, and educational programs aimed at empowering youth and celebrating African identity.
Building in Kigali: Masai’s connection to Rwanda and president Paul Kagame
Masai Ujiri’s vision extends far beyond Nigeria. He has also invested in Rwanda, where he is currently building a new facility in Kigali — part of his mission to uplift African youth through his Giants of Africa foundation.

Speaking at an international summit, Ujiri proudly said:
Paul Kagame is my friend, I believe in what Rwanda is doing. We are building something here in Kigali too – and it will change the game for African youth.”
This facility, modeled after the one in Lagos, is expected to include basketball courts, creative spaces, and leadership training centers. It’s a bold commitment to Africa’s future — one that recognizes the continent’s potential and invests in its people.
