The United States has shown its commitment to ending the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has persisted for several years.
In her first press briefing, the U.S. Ambassador to the DRC, Tammy Bruce, emphasized that the Trump administration stands with the Congolese people and aims to end the crisis in the eastern part of the country.
“We stand firmly behind the Congolese people, respecting their sovereignty and territorial integrity. I can say that in discussions with both Presidents, Secretary Rubio emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, accountability for abuses and human rights violations, and the respect for the sovereignty of the DRC by all parties involved,” said Ambassador Tammy Bruce.
She continued, saying: “We hope that the leaders will return to the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes, led by Angola, and take the necessary steps to resolve the conflict… We remain engaged diplomatically, and this will continue. It will not diminish or stop.”
This diplomatic effort from the United States is part of a broader initiative to support peace and security in the region. Additionally, ongoing diplomatic talks aim to reduce tensions and advance efforts toward a sustainable resolution.
As a reminder, the joint summit of the SADC (Southern African Development Community) and the EAC (East African Community), held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in Tanzania, called for the merging of the two peace processes underway.
The Nairobi Process, launched in April 2022 by the EAC, aims to eliminate all local and foreign armed groups operating in eastern DRC, while The Luanda Process, which started on November 23, 2022, seeks to address security challenges and promote regional stability.
However, on December 15, 2024, a tripartite summit involving the DRC and Angola, expected to sign a peace agreement, was canceled, which many perceived as a setback to the peace efforts.
All of this highlights that the United States remains deeply involved in trying to find solutions to the security issues in the region.
