Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he is ready to step down from office if it would lead to Ukraine joining NATO or ensure long-term security for the country.
This comes as Ukraine approaches the third anniversary of its war with Russia, a conflict initiated partly by Russia’s attempt to prevent Ukraine’s integration into NATO. Zelensky emphasized that his main goal is not to hold on to power but to ensure Ukraine’s safety and stability through NATO membership.
The Times reported that Zelensky has made it clear that while he is not focused on his own presidency, securing NATO membership is a priority for Ukraine’s future security. However, some analysts question whether NATO would accept Ukraine as a member, especially with ongoing concerns in Europe about provoking further conflict with Russia.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has initiated talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, excluding Ukrainian representatives. This has raised concerns among European leaders, who worry that Ukraine’s security could have broader implications for the continent.
It remains to be seen whether Zelensky’s willingness to step down will be enough to convince NATO or whether the alliance will continue to avoid making a decision that could escalate tensions with Russia.
